This summer I was fortunate to be able to volunteer with my mentor Guadalupe Avecedo at First United Methodist Church in Canyon! I was a bit anxious because I could not decide on where to volunteer. I wanted a place in which I could feel I was giving back to a community and couldn’t decide where! Luckily, he offered to help me and then informed me that there was an opportunity at FUMC Canyon.
The reason I decided to complete my community service hours with FUMC was due to the nature of the service. The community service was geared toward that of their youth. I’ve always been told that every generation has a chance for a greatness that surpasses that of the former. My generation has faced great defeats and has achieved great feats, but I wanted to be able to pour into a generation that is just getting into it’s starting pace. It is written in 1 Timothy 4:12 that one should not allow someone to “look down upon you because you are young…” Therefore I took in that advice and helped to refurnish and upgrade FUMC’s youth ministry section.
When I got to FUMC, they had already begun painting and refurnishing the place the day before. Yet I, with the help of 3 of their youth and my mentor, scrapped paint off the floors as well as the thick wax.
After we had scrapped off the wax from the floors, we began to place back the media booth along with chairs and tables. We also spent a good portion of our time placing back the instruments and TV’s.
The pictures can’t fully envelop the beauty that was restored to their youth ministry. The floors now shine with awesome wax, the ocean blue paint captures your eyes, and the new set up of furniture intrigues the youth as if it was a brand new place. I wasn’t able to attend their youth service but I heard it was great and that the youth truly loved it. I’m so blessed to be able to serve our future leaders and hope for America the beautiful.
