Summer is just coming to an end. I am sad to see it go but happy to start my senior year in high school. I enjoyed working at many different places and meeting new people in my community. It was both a rewarding and challenging experience, and I learned a lot during the past few months.

I met many new people in my community while working at different businesses and agencies. Highlights from me included working at the hospital (shadowing nurses and taking care of patients and working in the Emergency Room), learning about the city of Tulia and about our water treatment system with Steve and riding in the bucket truck, attending AHEC medical camp where I witnessed a live birth, serving and entertaining the kids at the Summer Lunch Program, doing a ride along with Officer Simms, and working in the Chamber office with Janette. I learned that although each professional environment is different requiring different skill sets, different attire and even different tools, all work environments require a professional attitude and a good work ethic.

One thing I am so thankful for is that my participation in this summer internship has really solidified my decision to choose nursing as my career to pursue in college. Although I had been to the clinic and the hospital before I had been the one receiving the care and not the one giving the care. Medical camp and working at the hospital really gave me the opportunity to gain first- hand knowledge of what it’s like to be in the position of the one who gives care to others. I found this extremely rewarding and something I would like to do as my occupation. I thank the Ogallala Commons for offering me this wonderful opportunity.

This summer has also been challenging in many ways. In addition to my internship work schedule I have attended two youth camps, helped with Vacation Bible School and taken a trip to Central Asia. Scheduling at times was hard but I found everybody that I worked with to be very friendly and flexible. I have also learned how to function on less sleep then I previously needed.

Over all, I would say this summer was one of the best and most memorable I have ever had. I thoroughly enjoyed all the businesses I worked for and all the people I worked with. I am very proud of my community and I think it is an awesome place to grow up and live.
