What I’ve Been Up To

By: Ellie Kleve

During my internship, I have been floating around my local hospital. I have been in a number of different departments including physical therapy, occupational therapy, the family practice clinic, the retail pharmacy, and the in-patient pharmacy. In occupational and physical therapy, I watched some sessions and watched how they treated certain injuries. In the clinic, I helped by creating a list of people to call for their well child check-ups and I also shadowed some nurses and doctors to dee what they do. I made a board on hypertension awareness and what causes it to happen.

In the in-patient pharmacy, I helped with the bi-annual inventory which is just counting the amount to see what needs to be restocked. In the pharmacy, I have been helping as a cashier. I also had a short time with EMS and learned to spot an abnormal ECG. ECG stands for Electrocardiogram.

The goal I have set for communication is to get to know the people that I work with better, and my leadership goal is to be able to know what I need to do and when I need to do it without having to ask and interrupt others. My goal of how to expand my professional network would be to get to know the patients better, be able to shadow and get to know more people and to work in many more areas of the hospital before my internship ends. Next week, I will probably be helping with the clinic again and shadowing physical therapists. I have been learning a lot and I look forward to the next couple of weeks before the internship ends.
