Right now with my internship with Primitive, I am working with another web developer on a team soccer site. It’s a young boys soccer team out of Lubbock, Texas. For the Fusion soccer team, I have worked on the hero, which contains the navigation bar, and the team schedule. It’s been fun and a learning experience using Tailwind components and styles, but also making the styles my own. This internship also requires me to read a book, called Atomic Habits. It’s about ways to cultivate good habits into your life for the long term, and to eliminate the bad ones. I’ve really enjoyed this self help book, and I can understand the importance of me reading it during my internship. The knowledge will come in handy not only for my professional work, but also for other areas of my life.
A couple of goals that I have in regards to communication and leadership are to ask more questions and to help others recognize and focus on their strengths. I have learned that asking questions is a necessary part of the job, not only when you are just beginning but all throughout your career. During my internship with Primitive, I was able to take the Gallup strengths assessment. My top five strengths are: Responsibility, Intellection, Consistency, Futuristic, and Empathy. I also learned the top strengths of the other interns. With information like that, I can really help others focus on what they are great at. I also want to acknowledge that every person brings something unique yet equally useful to the job.
I have recently decided to join an organization in Hays called Hays Young Professionals. It is part of the Chamber of Commerce here, and it has been suggested to me by multiple people around town. I decided to join in order to network for my web developing career and meet others in the community with similar goals and interests. I look forward to the social and networking activities this group provides and am excited to grow professionally.
