For my Ogallala Commons Internship I will be working at the Motley County Museum and Historic Jail in Matador, TX. This will consist of giving tours, making websites, and helping with a film premiere.
So far I have really enjoyed giving people tours of our excellent museum, some from here and some just passing through. One highlight of the internship is when people have specific questions that I have to research. For example, a couple came to town to learn more on their ancestors but didn’t know where to start. They called me and I did a little research and found a family member of theirs, a second cousin, which they didn’t know about. I sat with them and listened for a minute and it amazed me that they knew all the same people but not of each other.
Soon I will start making a .org website for the museum to show the directions and hours, also a sample of what to expect when taking a tour. If all goes well with the museum website I will be assigned to making a website for the Historic Jail as well.
The biggest assignment for my internship is to assist with the planning and preparation for the premiere of “A Line in the Sand” a film about the future of ranching on the Rolling Plains. I have already made a contact list of all those invited to the meal before and a separate list for those invited to the premiere only. Then I will send out invitations and make an R.S.V.P. list. For my community service, I will ride a charter bus with the residents that can’t drive but want to see the film. Then I’ll assist one of my supervisors with decorating and keeping things under control.
I have enjoyed my internship thus far and its only beginning, I still have so much more to do.
