Something about me – Blog 1

My name is Alyxzandrya Perez, I go by Lexie, I grew up in the big-time city of Kress TX, smack dab in the middle of nowhere with a booming population of just over 800 people in more recent years! I graduated from Kress High School and attended South Plains College in Plainview TX before transferring to Amarillo College where I graduated with a Associates Degree in Biology. I plan to return soon to study for a degree in Horticulture as well; I also hope to receive a degree in Botany someday soon. I am the proud daughter of a hard-working farmer who instilled in me the importance and significance agriculture, and everything that is a part of it, holds in our own and all other individual economies. Growing up in this kind of environment led me to such a fascination with the miracles and complexities of nature and science! I am passionate about both equally, particularly marine science, plant science, and the organisms that make up viruses. With so many possibilities to study so many different types of sciences, it’s been a struggle to pinpoint what my calling is and which part of the science field I’d get the most joy out of for a life’s career. Virology is such a complex and fascinating field but I also feel the same excitement when I consider the privilege of becoming a shark biologist! I’m excited to be a part of and begin the Ogallala Commons Internship program, I hope to improve my social and communication skills, as well as my leadership skills, and hope to learn so much more about the Ogallala Commons organization and what it means to give back to my community. I hope to gain a full understanding of the core concepts of the OC Commonwealth teaching and feel so blessed that I’ve been given the opportunity to begin this exciting journey!
