Hey everybody! As you all know I am Kylie Franklin from Baca County and this is my first summer interning for Ogallala Commons. Just like almost every other intern, I came into this whole thing going blind and having absolutely no idea what I will or should be doing. A few months ago I decided to start a community garden to help out the people from around here. Just before the OC Retreat I found out that a friend of mine will also be interning for OC. Let me tell you right now, having another intern actually live in town near the garden helps out a lot because driving from out in the middle of nowhere to Campo is not a cheap task to do every day! As of right now we have cantelope, various peppers, various tomatoes, and strawberries planted and coming up. Just the other day I planted musclun, spinach, and radishes and hopefully we will be planting more soon.
Along with the community garden, I am also a presenter for Campo Summer School. I teach photography to all ages and I don’t know about the kids, but I am having a blast teaching something so amazing to the younger generation. Also in my internship so far, I have began work on the school playground to make it look better and be safer for the kids.
Not only are we staying in Campo but we have also met with our County Commissioners to inform them on what Ogallala Commons is and what we do to better the community. The South East Colorado OC interns are also planning two Youth Engagement Days at LCC and OJC.
