This is my first time doing an Ogallala Commons internship, and I am loving it so far! I am interning with my local hospital, specifically working with an occupational therapist. Occupational therapy is a career that I have been interested in for a long time, however, I did not know much about it.
In this internship, I am not allowed to physically touch patients, as I do not have the qualifications necessary. A lot of my time is spent observing the OT, Nicole, as she works with patients. Since she is the only occupational therapist in my community, she works with all different types of patients. I have been able to experience a huge variety of patients and treatments in the short time that I have been here.
This internship is definitely showing me the specialties of occupational therapy that I am more interested in and less interested in. I am also able to help Nicole set up different exercises, clean equipment, and run errands. Occupational therapy continues to be a career that I am interested in. I would love to be able to help people, as it is something that I am very passionate about. I am so excited to continue to learn more through my internship.
GOALS: – I will stop being afraid to ask questions and talk to the OT about everything I am curious about. – I hope to continue to grow my leadership skills by working on positivity and kind words towards others. – I will make contacts in the occupational therapy world, who will help me as I go through college and OT school so that I will feel confident.
