Over the summer, I will be working on developing curriculum for the second year program of Vanguard Youth Leadership Academy with Enrique Gutierrez and Alan Cano. We are interning under John Wittler of Vanguard Strategic. The project we are working on is split up into three subprojects, we are all working together on the three projects but are all responsible as project leader for the project designated to us. My project is developing a curriculum for the second year of our program. Alan is working on tweaking the first year curriculum to adapt it to students of the Arkansas Valley to spread it to their schools in order to expand the program to their community. Enrique is leading the public relations part in which he will be putting out information out in advertisements in the Arkansas Valley area to better fit the needs of those students and promoting the program throughout our region.
We have been making presentations to the local banks and businesses asking them to fund students to go through the Vanguard Youth Leadership Academy. The three of us have been presenting as a team and will get the chance to do this again at the banquet we are planning for mentors, partners, and community leaders on July 21.
Last year’s academy served twenty-two students from Campo and Vilas; our goal for the future is to have 50 students enrolled in the Vanguard Youth Leadership Academy from across Baca County. This coming year after we develop curriculum we would like to expand to include students from outside Baca County including those from Prowers, Kiowa, and Bent County.
