Howdy, I’m Tizzy Walker from Kress Texas. I am currently attending Texas A&M University majoring in Agricultural Business. I am interning in Swisher county in partnership with businesses that are aligned with my major so I can have the opportunity to become more involved in what my community has to offer. The beginning of my internship I worked with Jason Birkenfeld at Soil Menders Ag. We took soil and leaf samples from surrounding farms across neighboring counties; Along the way Mr. Birkenfeld explained the business’s objective and goals for the future. We discussed how different chemicals such as sulfuric acid, boron, calcium, and phosphorous are mixed and applied to certain crops in precise amounts, in order to reduce crop stress and maximize production. Later that week I helped fourth through sixth graders get ready for another round of testing at Kress Elementary; I was able to assist students with reading and math skills. The following Monday, I organized and coordinated contact information at Head Start. I called businesses, designed to help families of lower income, to verify contact information and complied a resource packet for families to use. Constituted and refined the original Parent Handbook for easier use and comprehension. Finishing up my time at Head Start I composed a staff calendar. On Wednesday, I had the privilege to assist with District 2 4-H H20 camp. The other counselors and I organized and led groups in different water based activities and explained the importance of water safety. I look forward to the remainder of my internship with optimism that my experiences will lead to other educational adventures as well as opportunities to refine my skills.
