Because of my interest in health, wellness and nutrition, for my internship, my major project will be learning and researching the micronutrients, and their effects in our bodies, of the plants grown in the Seguin LULAC Community Garden and making an informational video that will potentially be presented to many people within our community, and maybe beyond, who suffer from common diseases related to poor nutrition such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure etc. Although this is the target audience, this will also be presented to the general public to inform others about the importance of eating to fuel your body, not to fill your body.
So far, these first two weeks in my internship I have been working at a summer camp hosted by Teatro de Artes in Seguin that has given me the opportunity to be able to come out of my shell a little and work on public speaking and presenting, which is an essential element needed in the professional workforce. I was also able to take the campers out on a trip to the garden since it is luckily around the corner of the building, and give a presentation to the kids about zone 8 and what things are grown here, along with basic nutritional facts about vegetables. It was endearing to see the kids faces in awe as they found familiar vegetables they normally just buy from the store, and be able to pick them right from the ground. Working with the kids these first two weeks was not only fun, but a good preview, I believe, for the work that lies ahead of me the rest of the summer!
