This summer has been extremely busy with many activities, sports, trips, and working, but in the midst of it all I was able to gain my ten hours of community service for the internship. This year I did a few different things to make up the ten hours, but they were all great ways to be of service to the community.
The first four of my hours were dedicated to our school library in Nazareth. One of our high school students runs a reading program throughout the summer on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each morning of the program there is a guest reader and an activity that goes along with the book. I helped out with the program on two separate occasions as the reader for those days. The first day I read the book “The Day the Crayons Quit,” and helped with the coloring activity. The second time I read the book “Velma Gratch and the way cool butterfly,” and helped the kids make butterflies with clothes pins and dyed wipes. I chose this project as a way to get involved with younger children who attend my school. I learned valuable skills involving how to entertain a big group of children.
Another of my four hours were also spent in a library, but it was actually the one in a neighboring town, Dimmitt. Through the Castro County Extension office, there is also a reading program throughout the month of July at their library. A lady from Nazareth is in charge of the program, and I contacted her in search of ways to serve my community. While helping with that reading program, I assisted in various ways ranging from taking out the trash to helping hand out the snacks to passing out the papers for the activity. I really enjoyed this task because it put me in a different environment and showed me how to react to a new group of people.
The last of the ten hours were dedicated to our communities annual German Festival. It is a big celebration put on by various people from the community, and it is a major fundraiser for our Community Hall. This year I served as a table waiter during the big sausage dinner. I helped refill people’s drinks and cleared the tables of trash.
Overall the community service has been a great part of this internship.
