For my community service project, I chose to go to Western Plains High School in Ransom Kansas and see if the needed any work done to their school. The superintendent, Jeff Jones mentioned that they needed some signage work done for the entrances of their gym. This project fit perfectly with my experience in graphic design and sign making with my business Skyline Advertising & Design.
I spent 2 hrs traveling to the school and evaluating the project needs. I took photos of the area where the signs were going to be placed and making measurements needed for the project.
The next 2 hrs were spent creating designs for the project that I thought the school would like. Their school is full of art and design projects. This made the project easier for my to get a feel for what they liked.
The next four hours were spent cutting the vinyl for the jobs and mounting it to the two boards that would go above the gym doors. Once mounted, it will make the entrances to the gym more attractive to the public. The final 2 hours of the project will involve me traveling to Ransom High School and mounting the 2 signage boards.
I chose this project because I like working with schools and sports. My creative design skills are a good asset to have when working on projects like this. The school appreciated me offering to do work for them and I believe it will open the door to future projects. The most challenging part of this project was designing the piece hoping that the school would like my design. I believe that every time someone for the community enters the doors of the gym where the signs are mounted, they will appreciate the fact that the school is trying to keep the building and artwork looking modern.
