Blog 4: Community Service

Due: July 19, 2015

My community service project consisted of helping with the 2nd annual Gavin B. Kleymann Memorial Livestock Show. I choose this service project because it was special to me. I was a showman in last years show showing my sheep and steer. Not being able to show this year I decided to help with it instead. My assistance consisted of signing people in as well as getting their animal information such as breed, weight, and any other information necessary. While another volunteer put the details in the computer, I put the show cards in the required classes. By doing this it lets the showman and judge know what class they are in.

The most challenging part of my job was dealing with showman’s parents. Most of the people that came to this show had big names, by that I mean these showmen are very good at what they do and they live to show. At one point our Internet failed which meant the printer would not print the show order and classes. After a couple cellphone hotspots later the show was on its way to success. Seeing all the people that came out to support the Kleymann family was the best part. Gavin was a remarkable kid with impeccable showing talent. To me this livestock show shows so much love that Gavin had for all people.

This experience was a good way for me to give back to those in my community who have helped me show all the years I did. From camps that our 4-H clubs put on to late nights in the ring, I see how much these show families mean to me. I enjoyed being able to the registration part of the show. From being the showman to registering people, I can now say I have done it all!
