Blog 4: Community Service

I fulfilled my 10-hour community service hours at the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Amarillo. The Ronald McDonald House is a charity all over the world that allows families of sick children to stay at a house while in the hospital. In Amarillo the Ronald house is located walking distance from the hospital and can house 12 families. Families are asked to make a donation to the house of however much they can afford but can always stay at the house for free.

I volunteered at the Golf tournament that the charity puts on every year in June. The Gold Tournament is a big fundraiser that hopes to raise at least $100,000. Each golf team that participates in the tournament has a “pro” compete on their team to help them win. The teams pay $1,000 to give back to the charity and play a fun day of golf. During the tournament I helped with giving the golfers a gift from a certain business in Amarillo that sponsors the event. I also helped set up and take down decorations and signs.

I chose this charity to volunteer at because there are many families everyday who have children put in the hospital who cant afford a hotel. The charity is run solely on donations so the more volunteers they have the more work they can get done.

The best part about my volunteer work was knowing that the more money the golf tournament raises the more families are helped. The most challenging part was trying to keep everything running smoothly. I was most impacted by the volunteers that have been helping the Ronald house succeed for over 20 years. These volunteers have been helping for so long it is great to see what sweet people they are and see how much they love to help the communities.
