Hello, my name is Iyankawin Yellow Hawk and I am an enrolled member of the Rosebud Sioux tribe (also known as the Sicangu Lakota), which is located in Rosebud, SD. I am a senior at the University of South Dakota currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Theatre. My interest in wanting to study Psychology was my desire to want to work and help people. As for Theatre, it was something I was already interested in ever since my childhood, I loved acting. My plans after receiving my undergraduate degree is to attend law school for a juris doctor with a specialization in civil rights and criminal law.
This summer (2019) will be my second year interning with Ogallala Commons in collaboration with the REDCO Food Sovereignty Initiative. Last summer I had the opportunity to work with the REDCO Food Sovereignty Initiative, which is an organization that collectively works with bettering the diets of indigenous peoples on the Rosebud Reservation. The food sovereignty initiative is part of REDCO which stands for the Rosebud Economic Development Corporation which works to better the economic system on the Rosebud reservation. While interning with the REDCO food sovereignty program it allowed me to work more collectively with the youth and to engage more with my community. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to work more with my people and the youth through this internship with Ogallala Commons in collaboration with the REDCO Food Sovereignty Initiative.
