Hello to the Ogallala Community! It’s Shyla Mason from Leoti, KS and I’m back again for another summer of getting to help my community. This time I will not only be an intern for Economic Development, but also for the K-State Extension office. The main focus will be on promoting our Farmer’s Market and Community Garden and expand the interest in them within the community for both adults and children. We would like for the Farmer’s Market to become a destination place instead of something that people just pass through. Also to engage the children with activities and teaching them about healthy eating with fresh grown vegetables from the gardens. Towards the end of this season our county fair will be going on and with that is a lot of hard work to acquire a successful weekend of fun for everyone in Leoti.
The previous summer my supervisor encouraged me to explore my future plans, which helped me to figure out how much I like working with kids and helping others. This is why I have chosen to major in social work at Washburn University. I hope that by the end of the summer I would have gained better individual planning and communication skills. Also a better appreciation and understanding of what has to happen for a community to prosper. The biggest aspect that I’d like to gain at the end of this internship are the skills to be fully prepared for college this fall. Last year was such an eye opening experience that I can’t wait to see what this summer has in store.
